Monument Inspection Services were commissioned to carry out a Thermographic survey on all the electrical, mechanical and building items within the premises, which totalled appoximately 150 items.

The survey concluded with items that naturally fell into 3 categories:

  • Green, (no action required,
  • Amber, (no immediate action required, but monitor)
  • Red (immediate action required).

One such item, that required immediate attention was a circulation pump motor whose main duty is part of the main pool filtration system. On first inspection the motor was exhibiting high casing temperatures, eventhough  the area around the fan impellor appeared  to be cooler, which is the normal  profile.

On closer inspection of the non-drive end bearing, it was discovered that the fan impellor shaft was not rotating.

This could have been attributable to mechanical failure of the shaft, which would have caused excessive overheating of the motor and eventual premature failure.

The result of such a failure on the daily operation of  Water world could have been as much as:- approximately £25,000-£30,000/day in lost revenue, in addition to this would have been the disruptive cost of addressing the failure and additional labour costs.
